The Jarrow Brewery was the brainchild of Jess and Alison McConnell. They owned the Albion Inn at Bill Quay but when the Robin Hood pub in Primrose, Jarrow came up for sale they decided to buy it and make it into a brewpub. It was decided that the theme for the beers brewed at the new brewery would be Jarrow Brewing commenced in 2002 but the work needed to get pub and brewery going was so considerable Jess was unable to celebrate his 50th Birthday. The hard work paid off and Jess and Alison were able to open the pub and brewery in the autumn of 2002, they have both been going from strength to strength ever since.

The initial brews were Jarrow Bitter - a 3.8% session bitter, Joblings Swinging Gibbet - a 4.1% copper coloured ale and Old Cornelius - a 4.8% a strong dark ale being named after the last surviving member of the famous 1936 Jarrow March. Further brews have continued the Jarrow theme with:- Red Ellen(4.4% abv) named after Ellen Wilkinson, an MP for Jarrow who was instrumental in organising the Jarrow March. Venerable Bede(4.5% abv) named after a local monk and scholar. A local attraction is Bede's World one of the main outlets for bottled Venerable Bede, Palmers Resolution(3.8% abv) named after Charles Palmer a famous local business man of the mid 1800's largely responsible for establishing the shipbuilding industry on the river Tyne. Rivet Catcher(4.0% abv) a reference to one of the many jobs involved in the shipbuilding industry Riley's Army Bitter(4.3) named after a song by the Tyneside group Lindisfarne and the latest offering which is McConnell's Irish Stout(4.6% abv)

Demand for Jarrow Beers is rising fast and the current brewery will not be able to keep up in the near future so Jess and Alison have purchased new and larger premises in South Shields with the intention of brewing their regular range at The Maltings in South Shields and speciality brews at the Robin Hood
